Lovely.  Did you know the Onondaga are Indians from New York.  They are part of the Iriquois Nation.  I used rock in front of my house and didn't want to use the stuff everyone else uses here so I bought some expensive rock from NY called Onondaga.  I had to look it up back then and never forgot it.  I know the cave is in MO and this photo is really lovely.  I like to go into these caves but not with too many people.  I always fear getting stuck in there with no air supply.  I know..........I'm so much fun..

  • I didn't know the Onondaga were Indians, but I've been told that one of the East Coast tribes, either Iroquois or Mahican, are in my family tree ... great-great grandmother.

A bit of trivia:  On the tour through the cave, our guide told us that he was going to turn out the lights so that we could experience total darkness.  He turned them out and then said, "Unlike many dark places you've been, no matter how long you wait, your eyes will never grow accustomed to this darkness because there is NO light here."

Isn't the tribe to which you refer called Mohicans or Mohegans?

  • I'm not sure.  I looked it up and Mohicans seems to be James F. Cooper's version.  Mahicans was Wikipedias version and there is a casino, back east, that goes by Mohegans. You chose.  :)

  • I was born in Waterbury, CT. and lived in Middlebury until I was five years old. Then we moved to Tucson, AZ ... Navajo, Pueblo and Apache country.  :) This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at August 25, 2018 12:42 AM MDT

That's freaky.  When I was a teen we were in one of those pay-to-see caves.  The guide asked if anyone would be bothered by the experience of cutting the lights and I spoke up.  I made nameless enemies that day.  But I'm a grandmother now and still sleep with the light on.  I do not like the dark!  :)

You might actually have some Onondaga blood.  That's really cool.

Of course. Syracuse, in central New York near Binghamton and Ithaca, is in Onondaga County.

It was fun choosing rock for the section I didn't want to pave.  Most everyone here uses white rock or river pebbles.  I get lots of comments on my rocks.  I had to pay a lot for them but the space is not large.  I like saying Onondaga.  That's the little girl part that never grows up.  ;)

There's a line in one of Syracuse University's college songs that goes, "Onondaga's waters mirror thy walls and high spires."

Absolutely beautiful ALF! :)  It looks like something out of a Disney movie.  I bet, in person, it was even more amazing. :) :)
