You're drinking with a friend and they inadvertently tell you they robbed an armored truck of $2,000,000. The only way anyone can get caught is if you turn them in.

They offer you one half of the loot to keep quiet.  You can really use the money because your child needs surgery and you have no medical insurance to pay for it.  Under those circumstances, would you consider taking them up on their offer if it meant saving your child's life.

Well first off I would be insulted and ticked off because any friend of mine would know that they don't have to bride me to keep my mouth shut and by inadvertently opening up their big mouth they automatically made me accomplice . But if it actually was a matter of saving my child I would borrow the money but I'd still have to give the person a head butt for  suggesting that they have to pay me to not rat then out and for making me an accomplice. Cheers!

You would not become an accomplice simply by someone telling you they committed a crime.  An accomplice assists in the commission of a crime.  If you help your friend hide the money or let him//her hide out at your house while the cops are searching for them, you may put yourself in jeopardy of being charged as an accessory after the fact.

Thriftymaid, I know that offer would be tempting for some people, especially someone who has a sick child that needs an operation in order to live.  It would be a difficult decision, I think, considering what you have to lose..

  • I'd walk away immediately, empty handed and friendless

Drunk or not you don't break the code in  ParksVegas ( thats what the local yokels call Parsksville because it's the biggest little city on the island). Cheers!

Still could land me in jail - I got a saying -  I can't do the time so don't make me part of your crime. Cheers!

I can only answer for myself, which I did.

  • I went through a long and complex set of scenarios thinking up what to do in such a situation.

This is what I came to in the end.

I would keep the friend drinking till he or she fell unconscious, which would ensure alcoholic amnesia the next day. No chance of remembering that anyone knew the secret.

The I'd tell the police and give the friend's address.

Then I'd get a second job to pay for the kid's operation.

Why would I turn in a friend? Because if I don't, the success of one heist is likely to lead to repeats, and that could end in a shooting, maiming or killing.

I would also tactfully cease being that person's friend.
