I watch for them now. I’m not as hard on myself as I once was. It’s always a sad tragedy when someone commits suicide.

Very sorry to hear of that sadness.
I imagine your friend never let on just how down he or she was.

He sure didn’t. It was unexpected.

    Very tough.
It's one of those things with depression. It carries a kind of shame enmeshed in it so that people feel too ashamed to talk about it - just when that's the thing they most need to do.
It hurts too when one realizes that someone one was very close to still couldn't share at that deep personal level. Or at least it does for me.

There've been plenty of challenging moments and phases of different kinds, but the worst has been depression.

Yep - there is nothing worse than when the mind turns against itself.
    Guessing you know it too.

    melancholia
    the black dog
    the mire of despond
    the abyss
the dark night of the soul...

hell is a place alive on this earth

Very glad I'm not there now.

Those are good analogies, but I have a simple mind. I'm a man, you know.

I'll have to take you at your word.
Personally, I'm inclined to believe that anyone with a good brain, man or woman, is likely to be highly complex - and by that, I don't mean a euphemism for neurotic. Intelligence is such a vast complex of complex processes.
