Is there a specific anything that most often derails your train of thought? Is there any way you can avoid it?

My train of thought consists of only a caboose. (I'm sure you remember those.) It's hard to derail that which doesn't move. Actually I have ADD and tend to jump from one thing to another.

I did not know that Ele. Well I'm a retired Internal Auditor and I can focus FOR HOURS on the problem at hand. Jim, on the other hand, gets distracted constantly and if there is a time constraint I have to keep reminding him of "that can wait till later" or "could you do that when we get back home because we need to leave in 5 minutes". That is not to say that I don't ever get distracted because I do. Hearing a favorite song or singer can take me away to someplace else...a different time. A couple of days ago we had our regular dental checkups and Ella Fitzgerald was singing. I LOVE her and I was off to yesterday back in the day when she was alive and the Queen of Scat and I had all her records and she'd guest star on someone's show. That was so very long ago. Thank you for your reply Ele!  :)

Ya I got a bit of a mental problem that makes me feel compelled to count things and once I start counting my chain of thought disappears. I can't avoid starting it but I found a way to stop counting once I have started the counting. What I do is when I start counting things  I use the voice of Count Dracula from Sesame Street  So if it's fire wood  I'm counting I will say (in my head) - one piece of fire wood ha ha ha - two pieces of fire wood ha ha ha - three pieces of fire wood ha ha ha.. Usually before I get to five pieces of fire wood ha ha ha I started thinking this is ridiculous and I stop counting and go back to what I was thinking about before I started counting. Seems crazy but what ever works ay. Cheers! This post was edited by Nanoose at October 1, 2018 1:44 PM MDT

Sounds like OCD. Obsessive Compulsive something. Some folks always have to straighten the fringes on rugs. Others wash their hands dozens of times a day. Some will not walk on any cracks in the sidewalk no matter how inconvenient it is. Still others are always counting things. Have you always had that particular quirk/idioscyncracy Nanoose? Are you very good at math and very comfy around numbers? I think all of us are OCD about one thing or another. For me if I'm going to be late I get very nervous and uncomfortable. I can't stand ever being late anywhere. Never have. I drive Jim CRAZY. I'd rather be an hour early and sit in the car than a minute late and I cannot remember ever not being like that. Now you have to admit that is a bit quirky to say the least. So everyone has something kinda odd like that. I don't know why but there it is! Thank you for your reply m'dear!  :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 1, 2018 12:35 PM MDT

Ya I don't think it's OCD  I think it's because my mother did the Brown acid at Woodstock and it messed up my chromosomes.  Any way I wouldn't say I'm good at math but I'm very good at guessing the number of things - like guessing how many pennies there are in a jar and stuff like that. Cheers!

Wow! Did you see the movie RAINMAN perchance Nanoose? It is an old movie with Dustin Hoffman and Tom  Cruise and Hoffman could drop a box of matches or toothpicks or something on the floor and immediately KNOW how many were there. He was a genius in that one area. It was a great movie. I'm sorry that your mom did acid. I don't know what "brown" acid is. I know my son's ex-wife has a brother who was born with fetal alcohol syndrome. A really nice guy who struggled in school but ended up being an EXCELLENT photographer and  that's how he earned his living. It's been years since we were in touch so I don't know if he still does it but his mom cleaned up her act and got off alcohol and drugs and became a nurse and joined the Peace Corps and spent two years on the Island of St. Lucia. Sadly she died years ago of cancer but I really admired her for what she did with her life. Too bad for her son she didn't clean up sooner but it could have been worse. Thank you for your reply. I never mean to pry Nanoose. :)

I have seen Rain Man and I do a pretty good Rain Man  impression - like if I'm guessing the number of pennies in a jar I will look at it and say - 826 pennies in the jar then I will look at it again and say ya 826 pennies in the jar. I am not as accurate as the Rain Man I'm usually a bit off one way or the other. I was goofing around about the Brown acid thing but my family does have a history of drug and alcohol abuse .Brown acid is just one of many types of acid but the Brown acid at Woodstock was flawed. Cheers!

Geez Nanoose you know more about Woodstock than I do. Have you always lived in Vancouver? Wasn't Woodstock in New York? Anyway  we're in the same time zone thee and me which makes it nice even though you are lotsa miles north of me it's pretty much straight due north. Other Answermug folks live in England or Australia so we talk across time and space. Thank you for your reply and Happy Tuesday! :)
