I've heard other settings, especially voice ones, drag like this as well. But the music was written as more of a march a la John Philip Sousa's great works. IMO, the best renditions are played by symphonic and marching bands such as in colleges and the military. Listen to the one I posted above by Cornell U's Big Red pep band.

As far as band performances, this is my fave. The piccolos are amazing.

I've seen this one as well of the US Marine band, even though this is Stars and Stripes Forever and not the Star Spangled Banner.

And I completely forgot to mention that I played flute growing up and later the piccolo, and I played the Stars and Stripes piccolo solo in a concert with my high school band way back in 1976.

Great answer. My niece had a cheer camp and did a halftime cheer at a local small college football game. Every time I hear our nation anthem I get goosebumps. This post was edited by Rizz at October 14, 2018 10:54 PM MDT

Whitney Houston's rendition at the Olympics.  Makes the hair on my arms stand up every time and brings tears to my eyes.

  • UFO performing Rock Bottom on The Midnight Special - pure bliss.  Just checked, it was actually Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at October 14, 2018 7:47 PM MDT

  • It was such a GREAT show. I would come home from being out just to watch it, and then I would go back out after.  Good times!

A bit off the beaten path, but my favorite choral work performed by not one but two great men's glee clubs, Morehouse College from Atlanta joining Cornell University at Sage Chapel in Ithaca, NY. Just listen to the close harmonies!
