I like you answer.  Assuming you went to a public school, the first paragraph of your comment has a "history is written by the winner" feel to it.  I agree...When I got older and started learning 'real' facts, I was surprised at how much they differed from my learnings in school. Right out of the gate, a glaring example is the mis-represented notion that the Pilgrims and Native Americans had a cordial 'love fest'. 

When wasn't it?
We as a nation have as many, if not more, faults than any other nation in history. Yet we are a nation of immigrant sons and daughters who descend from those trying to make a better life and legacy for our future generations. That's what makes our nation great despite the misguided sins our forfathers may have made. It's the strive and ideal that is great, not the reality or virtue, or government for that matter.
It's the hope and risk taking that's great. Nothing more.
