    1) Jokes are rarely appropriate over an open casket.

    2) Crude humor is generally not well received in mixed company.

    3) Sober people have no sense of humor. Pass around a bottle first. Unless you're standing over an open casket, at a nursery school, visiting a place of worship, or are in the ICU with someone. In those cases, you may need two or more.

  • "A good comedian considers their audience."  For instance, a play-on-words joke works best with people that speak that language quite well.

    Context, timing, and delivery have a lot to do with it.  Perhaps you just didn't know how to tell it.

    Often not what you say, but how you say it. Then if the material is funny to the audience you are telling then you have a chance.
