    No, but it may help them learn to focus their vision and develop hand-eye coordination.
    This would not be necessary in cultures where the baby remains at the carer's side 24/7 and has plenty of freedom and stimulation.
    Western parents often leave babies alone in cribs between nursing and nappy changes.
