No one said they were always white, that's just the color I used in the reference of my question.

  • Okay ... then I don't know what the white ones did that the other colors didn't/couldn't.

      (Sigh.)

You're stuck on the color when it has no particular relevance that changes the nature of the question. I just happened to select white because it was one of many colors commonly referred to when the practice was in widespread use. There were other references also, such as "house phone" or "lobby phone", "paging line", etc.

  • If it works and I feel courtesized, I don't care what color it is.

  • Okay ... I'm unstuck.  I just wanted to divert your attention for a while so that you might forget to call me "Geezer."  :))

I beg your pardon?  You put in your question: 'does anyone remember the white courtesy phone'?  Not the 'courtesy phone'.

White.   If you didn't mean white, why put WHITE?????    As in, "WHITE" courtesy phone is some "special" courtesy phone.

    It was white
    It was used
if they wanted to talk to you
or maybe an emergency call for you...

  • Why do I need to be "old enough"? A number of our larger hotels still have them, though they aren't white but beige or ivory.

  • Not white.  I thought it meant something too, but after much debate it seems that it was just a courtesy phone.  Being white wasn't pat of the reason it was courteous.  Had me fooled!!  :)
