They are, at least partially. Those and autonomous vehicles.

GM is mainly concentrating on SUVs and pickups, however, because that's what the punters are buying.

So how come they're closing plants and laying off 14,000-15,000 workers?  Is the demand for what they plan to build so small that they can't retool their production lines and retrain their workers? Thank you for your reply Sbf. :) This post was edited by RosieG at November 29, 2018 5:44 AM MST

No point, they already produce SUVs and trucks at their other plants, the ones that aren't closing, and the EV and autonomous divisions are still R&D rather than production.

The pollution from mining and creating so many batteries for these electric vechiles will be the next big environmental scare Rosie....Where they mine the stuff in Canada,Romainia and othere places is contaminating vast tracts of land and watercourses.....:(

Batteries POLLUTE D? I thought electricity was CLEAN. How do batteries pollute? What is the "stuff" they mine with which they make batteries or use in the process? Thank you for your reply and Happy Friday to thee !:)

Cadmium batteries...atomic No 48   ...Lithium batteries ... No 3 ...Vanadium batteries ,...There are far to many batteries to list Rosie.....
Many of the latest batteries components  are really dangerous to mine and turn in to actually batteries....So many people just throw them in the trash to dispose of them and as they erode they find there way into water sources and finally end up in the oceans and seas....
areas where they mine then in countries like Romania ,health and safety are unknown words....

There is an issue with Japenese electric vechile batteries and the thousands of miles they travel in between Canada and Japan back and forth between the to countries with the process of making the batteries.....
Then there is the safe  disposal of them all once they cease to hold a charge and need to be replaced....
In England ,if an all electric car crashes Our fire brigade that cut people from crashed vechiles cannot work on crashed /wrecked vechiles until a specialist /technician makes the vechiles safe.....
You can also get a fatal electric shock from a modern car just from changing a headlight bulb  if you don't know what you are doing....
