Sf and fantasy. I like to take a long ride through my imagination. Those are what does it for me.

Moi aussie mon ami! Ever read Daniel Keyes "Flower for Algernon". The movie Charly was based on it. A different take for sure. But as a child I DEVOURED fairy tales. All of them I could find at the local library. Translations from the Russians and the Chinese and the Japanese after I had read all the others. I collected "storybook" dolls which as I recall were from different countries but maybe not. I loved fantasy and other worlds of imagination and creative speculation. I loved all the WHAT IF movies and stories and TV shows. Twilight Zone. Lights OUt. Star Trek. Mork & Mindy. Don't know what TV shows you got in Australia but there was a show about a talking horse named Mr. Ed. Funny show. It's said that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. So is imagination and I think it scares some folks very bigly so they never use it. Thank you for your reply. My favorite author is John Steinbeck. I wrote him once upon a time and he wrote back! Yep! :)

I sent a query  via email to another of my fave fantasy writers, R A Salvatore. He sent an interesting and informative reply.

How cool is that? I wrote Steinbeck a 28-page both sides lined paper letter in 1964. C/O his last editor. I had taken a trip to Monterey and visited Cannery Row. All those people about whom he wrote I wished I could have met and lived among. I told him that never thinking I would get a reply. I did. Two sides of a postcard in his own handwriting that began "Dear Rosemarie" and ending with "Yours, John Steinbeck". It was dated 9 May 1964. I have it and treasure it and what he wrote was profoundly meaningful because it meant he read the whole thing! All 28 pages! I could not believe it. I still don't all these years later. I always have it handy to take out and read again. My kid wrote a fan letter to Lou Gehrig's widow after she came out with her book. My kid idolized him though of course Lou died long before my kid was born. He also wrote a fan letter to a coach named Sparky Anderson. He got replies to both letters. What can it hurt to write them? Sometimes just talking is all you need to do to feel better. Oh and once OLD SCHOOL (on Answerbag) talked about a politician whom he admired and the politician got on the thread and chatted with him! I think that was a big WOW! I saw the thread and said something inane to which the pol did not respond. His name ws Alan something and I think he was a Florida pol. I don't know what happened to him.Thank you for your reply Sbf!  :)

I have found myself lost in libraries and bookstores for countless periods of time, completely unaware of how much time is passing, and there are several sections I frequent. The ones I hit the most are fiction, history, language, foreign language instruction, reference and comedy.

      Great question!
