What's the most expensive thing you or your children ever asked Santa for?

My daughter informed me last night that she wanted a new doll, but it was expensive, so she said only Santa could get it for her. "What makes it so special?" I inquired. "It's like a Barbie, but it's fully-articulated," she explained, "And Bigger." I later looked it up. The danged thing is over $500 if you get it from the manufacturer and $800+ if you get it on eBay. Some Japanese craze called the SmartDoll. I don't understand.

What happened to the good old days where kids were satisfied with a $10-20 doll? Or a ball and a bat? Or did those days only exist in my mind? O_o Did you or your children ask Santa for pricey gifts too?

And what the heck makes this doll worth $500+???

Pick a question, any question. :)

  • I was about 16, I think. I had a 68 Cougar at the time, but I "needed" a 69 Camaro or the Firebird.

The '68 cougar is a sweet ride, always wanted one. Camaro /Firebirds kind of cooler but more common...

  • Yes!  I loved my Cougar.   Long after my desire to own a Camaro or Firebird, my uncle gave me my grandfather's old 69 Chevelle.    It was amazing.   I eventually donated it to a charity, but I miss it to this day.

69 chevelle eh? I'm a Detroit Iron kind of guy. My first car was a 69 Pontiac Le Mans. I now have one but made it a ragtop instead of a hardtop.

Poor man's GTO now, in reality it actually was the "luxury" trim option though...who uses that term anymore for car options...I'm OLD!!!

The cougar was very under rated, especially the Eliminator
A  cougar can still be had affordably and would probably be good investment as an entry into that era of classics

Look on the bright side---your daughter both knew and used the word "articulated."

It seemed my son had no idea that his entire list consisted of a compilation of expensive items. His father would get everything on the list and I would feel sick. Thankfully he grew up to be a good man and his world doesn't revolve around money and things.

My younger daughter wanted a purple gym/duffle/sports bag by PUMA or Nike, I can't remember for sure.  The company did not offer that bag in purple.  I went to the local sporting goods store in the village and the owner, from whom we had bought hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of stuff called his contact at Puma or Nike and arranged for a bag to be made in purple.  It cost a lot..a whole lot...but she was thrilled!!!

Eh... My daughter is happy with things that are free. She still gets excited when I have an empty cardboard box she can make crafts out of. lol I don't think $500 worth of doll would actually increase happiness levels. Not in any measurable way.
