I don't think there is a "too much." I'm not a big fan of weddings where the bride feels like she has to be a princess for a day, especially if she and the groom aren't in a financial position to have a big gala. However, when the couple has a big circle of family and friends, it's going to cost more. If the couple is in a position to afford it, so be it. It just doesn't make sense to me to dump so much money on a single day when the couple has a whole life ahead of them- that should be the focus.
"Send it all on the wedding, that way she can't afford to divorce you for a while." :))

My wedding cost a hundred bux. That was six weeks' pay in those days. We got a gift of a hundred bux, so it ended up being free. (Bride's family refused to pay. We invited them anyway.)
