    Actually ... no, they didn't.

    What they DID was transmit the information from one proton to another, across vast distances.

    This has been suggested as a possibility for a new type of "wireless" computer network.

    Or ... better yet ... a new means of instant communication between space probes and Earth control. 
    No more growing communications lag as the probe travels further away.
