Have you noticed a change in educational standards, what was you taught when you first went to school?

I was speaking to a friend a few days ago, her five year started school in September.  Since this date he has been taught about homosexuality, he has been taught about aliens, and he has returned home refusing to eat meat because his teachers had showed him a film on factory farming and he was completely upset about it.  The latest arrangement is a school trip on the trains and underground for this group of five year olds so they can understand what it is like to be an immigrant or refugee. What on earth is going on with the education system?

At five I was learning Basic math, English, cooking, reading, and playtime, and we went on trips to museums, or nature parks.

In my first three years of school I wasn't taught much as I already knew everything they expected at that level except history. I think my oldest sister taught me. School was incredibly boring to me. But they did teach the three Rs..Reading, riting, rithematic.

  • In India, where I am  5 and 6 year olds are still taught in the old fashion way about fairies and mermaids, and love at first sight, and stories which have happy endings. But when they're home and see the channels their parents watch, I wonder if they really believe if real life is as sweet and syrupy as their Miss Patel (or whoever) led them to believe just a few hours ago. Yes education has changed, it has been incredibly dumbed down in the US.  Take a look at the 8th Grade Graduation Tests from the early 1900's.  Most current College graduates cannot pass them as they require a higher level of knowledge.  Here are 4 examples have fun, I did barely pass.  So how do you think you will do?

Hi, Archerchef, thanks for that I gave it a go. I'm the UK, so some questions would have been different here, I didn't do as bad as I thought I might, but we did have similar questions when I was growing up, certainly different to the homework my niece and nephews bring home now.  I think they are dumbing us down, I remember we use to have far more educational programmes on the television, all I see now are reality TV shows. You are so correct.  I will apologize for the US centric questions, I could not find any UK.
