How much/how long do you allow yourself to indulge in negative feelings when they creep in to your generally happy/positive psyche?

And do you read a funny book/watch a funny show or listen to music that feeds those feelings?

My shutdown threshold is about 3 minutes, tops...depending, of course, on the nature of the negative feeling. For people who've suffered from depression, negativity is not an 'indulgence' they can afford.

I am not generally positive. Quite the contrary in fact.
So when dark feelings or thoughts come to my head I let them in.

Aahh... so this was definitely a N/A type of answer. : )

You should give positivity a shot.... although I agree with the experts who say it's more difficult to be happy than unhappy, it's worth the effort!

    Thanks for replying!

That's really pretty impressive, Nimitz! You're absolutely right about it being a risky indulgence, too. Obviously, it does depend on the nature and what precipitated the feeling. I was sort of having a little pity party for myself, and I do believe in the "healthy cry" philosophy. But get it out and be done with it.

Thanks so much for the reply!

As long as it takes to expose them, deal with them and move on.   They need to be recognized and not just pushed deeper into the psyche.

Somehow you don't strike me as having a "generally positive/happy psyche", Sharonna (I hope I'm wrong for your sake), but thank you very much for responding. You're right about identifying and recognizing, and not just the feeling but the reason behind it as well.

It’s not something that happens with me often at all; I turn what little negativity I have onto itself to feed, it eats itself up, cancels out, and rechannels the energy it had originally harnessed inti into the happy/positive psyche.  It’s complicated.

By the way, due to the people who have left the website and deleted their accounts for good, their answers to this question no longer appear, rendering your comments to them floating in midair and a bit nonsensical, just in case you care to delete them.

Some of your replies were lost in the mountain of notifications I've received from your recent "interest" in everything I've ever posted on this site.

I've been dealing with this s**t for 20 years. I'm damaged goods and that will always be true. Mental illness is kicking my arse and I got no fight in me. I don't think I ever had any fight in me. BRB. I need a drink.
