Should the government do welfare checks on all home-schooled children?

That's apparently a thing being debated now- that all home-schooled children should be treated as if they're living in abusive homes and be subject to regular checks by the government. https://pulpitandpen.org/2019/02/15/proposed-bill-puts-homeschooled-children-in-same-category-as-abused-or-neglected

Maybe academic checks. The wellness checks are a bit controversial.

I think that’s ridiculous. The govt can’t handle what‘s already on its plate. This would be fodder for lawsuits waiting to happen. Nobody should want the govt in our homes or dictating how we raise our children.

Besides, if the govt wants to watch you, there are ways to do it without passing any new laws.

    Hello Just Asking
4th Amendment..."The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
    That pretty much covers it...

Of course not.  That would be totalitarianism.

What will they do when they come across free range children or parents on drugs?

I would venture to guess CPS gets involved. That's the whole point- to catch children who may be in abusive or neglectful situations. But, in order to catch those situations, they're considering going into everyone's homes on a regular basis.

I don't live in Iowa---so I am not sufficiently aware of the potential reasons (stated or unstated) for such a bill, nor am I familiar with any issues that "inspired" its introduction and am therefore not really qualified to have a meaningful opinion byond "preferring less government than more."

No.  Not routinely.  Parents should indeed do welfare checks on their children while at public school.  Unannounced pop-ins are a very good thing. The difference in the good schools and lousy ones is parental involvement and presence.

Education is the responsibility of parents, not government.

That seems a weird idea to me.
I've known quite a few parents who home schooled - watched the kids grow up, saw them transition into responsible, independent and successful young adults.
I saw no evidence of any kind of child abuse; on the contrary, the kids got much better educations than what was possible via the state schools, and  the families shared asocial life, so there was no lack of opportunities for the kids to become well socialised.
None of the parents were ever on welfare; they had jobs or businesses or were farmers. This post was edited by inky at February 19, 2019 9:01 AM MST
