What else causes smoke besides fire?

    Heat.

I think of woodburning ... using a hot "pen" to mark on wood.
The wood isn't actually supposed to catch on fire - but it does produce a little smoke.

    Soldering, also.

What causes soldering sparks Walt? Electricity? I mean you need electricity to solder don't you? You plug it in and turn it on and bingo! Could you solder anything without the use of electricity? Thank you for your reply! :)

Technically ... you just have to get the solder hot enough to melt, so you could do it with a lighter.  Not recommended, since it would be difficult not to melt a circuit board that way.  But when I worked at a RadioShack Franchise, I had a coworker that would use a lighter to melt solder to the ends of wires (EG: for stereo installs).

When soldering, the sparks are usually caused by the rosin.  Get it too hot, and it sparks. This post was edited by Walt O'Reagun at March 6, 2019 7:05 AM MST

Very true Nanoose. And when dry ice "melts" it leaves a powdery residue. It is very mysterious isn't it? Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday to thy! :)

Certain types of fungus as the wind blows on them to distribute their spores.....
In England we have huge Puff Ball mushrooms that are edible......the spores from just one mushroom are enough to cover the worlds land masses if every one germinates......
Steam from water is a Gas and could also be viewed as one as it evaporates.....
Friction causes smoke just from rubbing metal together.....Rotting vegetation gives of visible gas as it breaks down and degrades
I believe certain bugs give of smoke as a defensive mechanism.....
Many chemicals when mixed together give of smoke as well.....:(

WOW! Once again you've overwhelmed me D with all that info in response to my question. Gadzooks! Who knew? Well clearly YOU do! Is steam from water really a GAS? I guess it is. And one mushroom's spores could theoretically cover the world's land masses? Now that is mindblowing and mindboggling! What metals would you rub together for what purpose D?  Thank you for your thoughtful and informative reply and Happy Wednesday to thy! :)

Tyoe in to google puff ball mushrooms Rosie, they grow to the size bigger then a a bowling ball....My dad has a friend where one grows 15 feet from his front door...I never realised they were edible ,so never picked it....
. I've not been there for ages to his home and must ask him to save one for us to taste...
    Yes ,steam is a gas...

Any metal will give of fumes when they get red hot ,all will smell different as well...
Copper goes green with age and weathering...
The Statue of Liberty in America is a copper clad hollow structure given to Americans by the French many decades ago.....
The Patina on it is called  Verdigris ,not sure my spelling of that is right..:(
It changes to that colour because of an oxidation reaction ...
That green colour is very hard to copy paint wise....
