Do you compost your food leftovers ?

In our city, there is trucks that take compost . They say its illegal to throw food in the trash now ( if ever you get caught up you get fined ).

Do you also compost your foods ?

We eat almost all of our leftovers. We will also take older leftovers to a forested area for the critters.

Not exactly compost, but I throw my coffee grounds and crushed egg shells in one spot where nothing grows. I used to put the grounds around the foundation to repel ants, but the ants seem to be pretty well behaved now. I guess you could say they got ground out.

Beside the dumpsters are the recycle bins for paper materials and metal/glass containers and organic material. All my organics go in the organics bin.

No.  I used to, but not since the rats moved in.

  • In Montreal, where I believe you said you live, it’s illegal to throw any recyclable item in the trash. Not just food waste. You can be fined up to $2000 for doing so. And yes, I recycle everything that I can. They give us a  compost bin that gets picked up same day as trash, so it’s not really a big deal.

I have a compost pit I just toss it it. It was a huge pit my sister and I dug as children, we liked to fill it with water and play in the mud. My parents weren't happy to discover the pit, but they ended up turning it into a fire pit and now we use it for compost.

New York City doesn't require you to separate food into compost bins.  We recycle paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, etc.

That's wonderful! Many areas in the US don't even offer curbside recycling, and often the ones that do, charge extra $.

I try not to waste food. If I must throw it out, I generally put it outdoors for my animal friends to consume.

  • My husband mostly eats any leftovers we have.  We don't compost .. but we do recycle.   We just don't have any place to use compost where we live.  We can't put out any scrap food items in the yard because it could attract bears, coyotes, racoons or other unwanted animals to our subdivision.
