Unfortunately, I believe there was some covering up; only trained and authorized mechanics should have been on that machinery, he and I were in a communications platoon. He may have tinkered around in a shop before joining the Marines, what we call a "shade-tree mechanic" here in the States, but he certainly was not certified for it in the Marine Corps. One Staff Sergeant feigned ignorance that Ben was on the machinery, stating that he must have decided on his own to use it. The motor pool was short-handed, and Ben was one of the men sent there on a work detail; the duties were supposed to be menial tasks that freed up mechanics to do their repair work. Ben, being s young Marine, may have been trying to impress a Corporal or Sergeant, "Sure, I know how to use that, I worked on it all the time back home,"
To my knowledge, no one ever faced disciplinary action for it, but I'm not sure.
I still remember his memorial service; his parents flew out to Hawaii, the unit chaplain (who didn't know Ben from Adam) got his nickname wrong during the eulogy.

  • Such things do happen, I know. My college friend's mother died in her sleep the very night of her other daughter's birthday. She was hale and hearty till the end. Most unexpected.
