From my experience that would stem I think more from insecurity. To some extent is natural to want to make ourselves as comfortable as we can but beyond that having to have control would be more to be able to feel they are more powerful than they actually are. And once they control us they only resent us more.
I have to agree with insecurity. Narcissists are always having to convince everyone (and themselves) that they are the center of the universe. Otherwise, they would have to deal with the fact that someone else might be "better" than they are at things.
