Imagine a relative of yours or a close friend is about to become homeless and you've offered him/her to live at your residence.

Would you impose absolutely NO conditions whatsoever on those living arrangements?

Heck no!!!  I have relatives who are homeless (right in this very town).  If I ever offered him or any other family member to stay here (which I never will), I would have some rather semi-strict conditions. My house is neither a homeless shelter nor a motel.

What the heck does "rather semi-strict" mean?  It's both redundant and self-contradictory at the same time.

Semi strict as in - "if you don't follow my rules to the letter I'll run you over with a semi."

(if you knew my relatives you'd understand) This post was edited by Shuhak at May 26, 2019 5:52 PM MDT

When writing, I would suppose redundancy and internal contradiction could be used to suggest the concept is nebulous at best in the writers mind or that the writer could not find a precise word to convey his meaning.

I think it would be foolish to have no conditions.

We have been in that situation more than once and yes we did require conditions...pretty easy ones. No drugs, no druggie friends, would need to work or at least be trying to get a job.  One moved in but out very quickly the job was going to take 60% of his check for child support and he could not have that so he moved to another town where he knew people who would pay cash.

Another did not move in because of the no drugs and no druggies...also was offered same deal to live a child of theirs but could not take it either.

Very sad to watch but there is nothing you can do for people who will not help themselves.

I would have to assess this on a case by case basis.

Does that leave open the possibility that in some cases you might not set any conditions?

  • My home is always open to my parents and my uncle's family, whom I love dearly, no conditions.
To all others, my home is my castle.

Thank you. Does that mean to others the castle is open, or closed?
