Discussion»Questions»Communication» Why would someone say, " . . . United States, including Hawaii."? Hawaii is already included, it's part of the United States.
We may say this to include the stupid people who don't know that Hawaii and Alaska are states. Just like there are people that don't know what the Civil War was about.

You mean annexed or stolen from the Hawaiian people that I'm sure they didn't want to happen... I think you took to many lessons from the English Royalty that thought they had the right to take from any country that was far less able to defend its borders.... The rich and powerful are never made to return the things they steal....How strange :(
I saw a documentary that said different once....it was all before I was born so what do I know...Like all wars, the winner or Victor always writes the history books..:(
You're both correct. Caucasians, who by that time had about 300 years of experience, stole Hawaii from its native people just as they had stolen land from the native peoples of every other place on earth they trampled. When a new culture overtakes an existing culture through military might, disease, genocide, mass rape, forced religion, disallowing the native languages, disallowing native attire, forced education and interjected with poverty by replacing native bartering systems with foreign ideals of monetary value, that's stealing. By the time the Hawaiian people "voted" to turn over their land to the whites, they had been extorted for many decades into accepting "an offer they couldn't refuse."
The truth always makes good reading...If it's how it happenes, say it as it is and stop hiding behind your ancestors evil mistakes... English royalty have a lot to answer until this very day... Its never the people themselves.....the minows are never ever allowed to make rules, they are just required to follow blindly.... Well wrote Mr D.....
You're correct in that referring to the continental United States excludes not only Hawaii, but also the state of Alaska and the sixteen US territories and possessions. It's obvious that the word "continental" means those United States that are on the continental. However, the person who wrote the line that prompted my query specifically wrote "US including Hawaii". ~
The continental United States is the area of the United States of America that is located in the continent of North America. It includes 49 of the 50 states (48 of which are located south of Canada and north of Mexico, known as the "lower 48 states", the other being Alaska) and the District of Columbia, which contains the federal capital, Washington, D.C. The only state which is not part of this is Hawaii (as they are islands in the Pacific Ocean and not part of North America).
"On May 14, 1959, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names issued the following definitions based partially on the reference in the Alaska Omnibus Bill, which defined the Continental United States as "the 49 States on the North American Continent and the District of Columbia..." The Board reaffirmed these definitions on May 13, 1999."[1]
Some sources incorrectly mix up the continental United States with the contiguous United States (which consists simply of the lower 48 states and the District of Columbia). The contiguous United States (also known as the United States Mainland) does not include Alaska, Hawaii, or any other territories under the control of the United States.[2][3][4]
Alaska is unique among the US states as it is part of the North American continent, meaning it is attached via Canada, and so is part of the "Continental United States". However, Alaska is not part of the "Contiguous United States", because it is not attached directly to the lower 48 states.
Prior to Alaska's becoming a states, all states in the United States were contiguous as well as continental. Probably to emphasize that reality and preclude erroneous nomenclature, the distinction between the United States that us "baby boomers" grew up in vs the 49 states being in the same North American Continent but no longer contiguous was made explicit.
Hawaii is neither contiguous to the other states nor is it on the same continent.
Per diem rates in Hawaii are set by the Department of Defense (DoD), and apply to U.S. Government personnel, or the employees of private companies that use DoD per diem rates, travelling to Hawaii for business
CONUS = The 48 CONtiguous States and the District of Columbia or "the lower 48, as they're affectionately known to the Alaskans."
OCONUS = Outside Continental United States
Overseas = Any country or place beyond the CONUS. Alaska, Hawaii and the U.S. territories are considered overseas under the Space-A Regulation.
