That both global warming and global cooling are accurate in their description of what is happening to the Earth at this time.
It is actually, global climate change.

I'm not sure that any beliefs about global cooling are currently common

Independent specialist scientists researching climate and ecology now widely agree that the earth has natural carbon cycles which drive geological periods of global warming and cooling. Over the last 119 years of experiment and research, the consensus is now solid that there is no misconception about this. They also agree that humans are loading the atmosphere with greenhouse gases much faster than the naturally evolved carbon cycle can cope with or adapt to.
While we are in a natural warming phase between ice ages, the rate of warming is faster than is natural - and much faster than plants, animals, agriculture and ecosystems can cope with. The oceans are now deserts compared to what they were a century ago. 99% of oceanic algae has died. 90% of the world's coral reefs have died - the main spawning grounds for most oceanic species. Hundreds of thousands of species of animals have already gone extinct.
The Arctic ice recedes every summer and no longer covers the pole in winter. The Arctic permafrost is thawing out, releasing methane from the previously frozen clathrates. Portions of Antarctic ice shelves are breaking off, drifting away and melting. Glaciers in Greenland, the Himalayas and the Alps are melting. River deltas, island and low lying cities are starting to be submerged. Some coastlines are eroding much faster than in previous centuries. The deserts of the Middle East and North Africa are growing by twenty metres per year. Catastrophic weather events are becoming more frequent and less predictable.

Perhaps it could validly be said that many lay people still do not yet properly understand what global warming is, how it is manifesting, what causes it, what can help to slow it down, and how urgent the issues really are. This post was edited by inky at June 12, 2019 6:26 AM MDT

WoW!  I was just about to get some ice out of the freezer and now I feel badly about doing so.
I knew some of those facts but not all of them.  Thanks for sharing and letting us know. :) :) This post was edited by Merlin at June 12, 2019 12:42 AM MDT

Making the world cool is not going to change climate change.  We don't care about the earth being cool and groovy and trendsetting.  We just want to  live on it and not die of toxic waste poison.

I know that in the 70's it was claimed the Earth was going into an ice age.

I know the earth has natural climate cycles that it goes through.  I know there are areas that are cooler than they were and others that are hotter.

Ok, er, um, which of those is the common misconception?
