GMO. Genetically modified organisms.

Gamma rays have been doing that for a billion years. Some good, some bad. Why are people so afraid of artifical GMO, when we are doing the same thing nature has been for doing so long? Why can't we hurry nature a bit?

I agree that there's a lot of paranoia about GMO.

At the same time, I also think there's not nearly enough caution.

I'm guessing you would have seen documentaries on the problems arising from pesticide resistant crops - mainly pulses, grains, and rapeseed at present.

The crop seed is genetically modified to resist glyphosate (Round-Up), metsulphuron (Graze-On) and a range of insecticides. This means the crops grow while the weeds and bugs die.
The problem is that each of these poisons has a half-life; Round-Up 24 hrs, Graze-On 38 days, some pesticides leave residuals likely to last thousands of years. As the chemicals get reapplied every season, the residuals accumulate.
It kills the good bacteria and micro-organisms in the soil, making it increasingly less fertile. More and more fertilisers are added to compensate for the lost productivity - but these serve only the primary growth needs of the crop. The crop has poorer immunity and becomes more prone to diseases.

In addition, when pesticides are sprayed, wind drift to neighbouring farms affects their crops.
There has also been some evidence of hybridisation between natural and some GMO crops.

In areas where farmers have banded together to return to organic farming practices, the fertility of the soil, and productivity and disease resistance of the crops have proved far more profitable than using GMO seed, fertilisers and pesticides. If you watch the documentaries, the difference is obvious.

Because humans should never  play at being God and mess with Mother Nature that's taken billions of years to work things out using it modicum of common sense over donkeys years of trial and error  :)

Eat this GI muck at your peril.....and don't ever force it on others....:(

    Nature is perfect
    Man makes with limited knowledge
    things that are limited.
    Nature is balanced with life
    essence of Nature is love
    Absolute Conscious Love
    without borders
    Man makes GMO
    without Knowledge OF
    essence of nature,
    without working as one
    as the Organism
    He works as a separate
entity creating something that is limited.
    .....Wait!!!....Oh Dear...
I forgot to read your question
    sorry haha
