Why were guns invented?

To kill.

To hunt and for war.

Quite simple, easier to kill prey, better than a bow and arrow. I find that the Colt .44 magnum is good.

The Chinese invented gunpowder long before guns were invented but they only used in to make fireworks that was supposed to bring good luck and prosperity.
Some inventive person or people from the west got the idea explosive stuff could be used to launch a projectile if inserted in a tube and ignited by a fuse. Developed as a more effective weapon for killing than the bow and arrow.

I doubt very much that guns were invented for hunting or sports first place. The gun won't have been accurate enough for hunting but much more effective in a battlefield on closer range.

The Chinese very much used gunpowder as a weapon... the fire lance even sprayed shrapnel. Theirs was the first, to my knowledge.

It was a pretty impressive weapon for the era... Basically a flamethrower that sprayed shrapnel and so simple it could be made from home. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that bad boy.
