  • Distillers I see no problem with.

Drug companies on the other hand have no legitimate need or reason to advertise.

  • Distillers are ok by me. Atorneys should go as well as infomercials and those Evangelicals combining religion with prepper food sales like  "Amway for Jesus"

    Amen to that!

The USA is only one of two countries that I know of that allow "ethical" medications to be advertised on television, New Zealand being the other. Now it's hard to tell the difference between the ethical drug ads and the patent drug ads.

I also remember when TV broadcasters recognized that they were invited guests in your home and you could pull the plug on them at any time. The National Association of Broadcasters even had a "code", the "Seal of Good Practice" that member stations (and others as well) were expected to follow. They tried to maintain some semblance of propriety.

Sadly, I haven't seen that seal at the end of any programs produced since the mid 1980's.

I also remember when TV news was actually news. Political commentary was reserved for editorials and commentary programs (which I welcomed from all points-of-view).

With deregulation and cable penetration (I remember getting the daily fax from Broadcasting and Cable that announced that cable viewership had just surpassed over-the-air viewership, back in 1998 or 1999 . . . ) that's all been nullified. Competition (ie. the dollar) now rules. And now that the camel's nose is under that tent I'm afraid that there's no going back.

I am getting VERY tired of lawyer ads and med ads. Seems like the lawyers jump on ANY drug side effects and find someone that has had it, then makes an ad about it. Booze ads I don't care about. I am a drinker.

I'd love to see the end of prescription drug advertising on TV. With the money they spend, maybe they could drop the price of the drugs!

Element99, I agree with your comment about lawyers.  I'm surprised they aren't mandated to supply their clients with a free pint of blood at the end of their case; considering the fact they're the blood suckers making up to 40%, which is more than their clients receive.

I am ok with distilleries advertising. Drugs and lawyers shouldn't though.

Come on, 30% Canadian content won't kill you. Everybody knows that all the best content and talent is exported from Canada to the US anyway. ;-D

Boredom might not be fatal, but why take the chance?

Actually a lot of independent production content that airs in the States is produced in Canada. I'm pretty sure that Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda was produced there. Also shows like Flashpoint (which actually aired for a season or three on CBS "south of the border") and Saving Hope are produced by the "Eh" Team; both of those shows still air on ION. A lot of it is pretty good.
