I absolutely would and I would also offer them housing and a lucrative salary as well as protection from a predatory government spinning out of control and rapidly starting to resemble Nazi Germany

If I could afford it, gladly.
I regard the majority of illegals as people seeking refuge or asylum from dire circumstances.
It is not an easy thing to leave one's country and culture of origin.
People rarely do it unless desperate to survive.

(And I'm not talking about temporary tourism, study, or exceptional people taking overseas jobs so they can reach their full potential.)

I'm not sure what your immigration laws are in Australia. They might be legal.

Our immigration law constantly changes depending on the most recent government.
This year the number of new arrivals will be capped at 160,000 from July 1, down from 190,000.
Currently, 28% of Australian citizens were born overseas - all legal immigrants.
To be legal, they have to pass stringent tests - no criminal history, having a trade or profession we need more of, of breeding age, willing to adopt Australian values and abide by the laws. There are some exceptions - relatives of any age, and business people with lots of cash they want to invest here.
There is also a special intake for asylum seekers - 1,500 per year. They must have come from a refugee camp, must have proof of identity and no record of affiliation with a terrorist group. They must be able to prove that their lives would be in danger if they returned to their country of origin. Naturally, a lot of people who fit this category are unable to prove it, leading to a great deal of injustice.

But Australia's shame is its treatment of illegals who have attempted to arrive by boat via people smugglers. We signed agreement to international protocols on asylum seekers and refugees - including those who come illegally. Legally, they have the right to claim asylum if they land on Australian shores. So the govt uses our satellite and navy patrols to catch the un-seaworthy vessels from Indonesia before they reach our continental waters. We have been shipping the men, women and children to Nauru and Manus Island. The former is Melanesian, the later a part of New Guinea - both paid billions to maintain the illegals in concentration camps for the last six years. Self-starvation, mutilation and suicide have been part of the problems. Many have suffered illnesses with little or no treatment. Some have died. Also rapes, unwanted pregnancies and violence against women by the guards. All children show severe signs of trauma.
The situation is changing now due to pressure from the Australian public and the special attention of lawyers and doctors. Nauru disbanded. Manus now has better accommodation, curfew at night, but free to move outside the camp during the day. Flights to Australia for medical treatments now permitted.
The range of refugees includes Hasara from Afganistan, Tamils from Srilanka, Rohinga from Burma, and various African tribespeople persecuted by other tribes - too many to name. Most have no papers precisely because of the ways in which they've been persecuted.

I feel nothing but shame about Australia's behaviour towards people in such desperate circumstances.

    No. That is illegal.

We had a man come in and ask to mow the grass. After figuring out he was illegal to work (he told us)...we told him no thank you. We would have our sons mow it.

The employer would be in jail for up to a year and up to a 10,000 € fine.  You are in jail immediately. Neighbors and fellow workers who do not report are subject to up to 3,000 € and 60days in jail for non-reporting. Immigrants lose their status and are immediately deported.  There are legal ways to come in, illegals ways are punished harshly.

The illegal will be detained interrogated and deported.  Since the refugee crises it is common and necessary. If they cannot be deported to their Home Country then the 1st country whose Borders they touched..  This is what is causing the problem for Greece. Italy and Spain.  Spain boots about 5K illegals a month it should be noted.

It is the refugees and Brussels response which triggered the Brexit Crises and the rise of the right wing in the EU.  The FPO at most got 7% of the vote right now it is 49.3%.  I am living the crises and hate Merkl This post was edited by Archerchef at July 24, 2019 5:29 PM MDT
