I've slowly evolved out of being dysfunctional,
until just at the point of being close to functional
and now on the brink of old age,
I'm likely to soon be defunct.

    Thanks for your kindness, Ele.

Personally, I don't see it as a poem, because it lacks sound-play, metaphor, lateral thinking and emotional resonance.

Something closer to a half-way decent poem is this one I wrote about a year ago...

If to write is to swim in surf…

If poetry is the beach of an infinite ocean,

I have dipped my toes in the edges of waves,

but not yet learned to swim.

    I fear the undertow,

the wave that turns me in somersaults,

dashes my head against the sand,

    and leaves me stunned.

I quite often divide long sentences into enjambed lines, not to make them poetry, but to make it easier for the reader to grok the sense.
It started when I was emailing with an acquaintance who had a limit to how far his eyes could scan a line - ten words.
Something about the rhythm of it appealed to me - not always exactly ten, but following the feel of the language.
Probably a better way to do it would be to write much shorter sentences - but then it wouldn't express the way it sounds to me in my mind.

I've been blogging a few poems lately, if you'd be interested. :) This post was edited by inky at August 10, 2019 2:45 PM MDT
