Wow, what a blahst from the pahst! When I was a kid I was hooked on a book called "Boxcar Kids". It was about a family of orphans raised by an older sister and living in an unused boxcar. For some reason that book doesn't seem to exist any more.
I was going to say that the Boxcar Kids seemed familiar. Char found it for you. The book I mentioned is a historical novel and I knew nothing of this part of history. There were so many orphans in New York they were shipped out in trains running back and forth across the country. Pretty much anyone who wanted one or some could claim them. They were used for labor a lot. Anyway, it was not long and quite good.
