What is the Difference between "Whites Only" and "English Only"?

Whites only is restrictive my race/color.  English is not. So that is the difference. I figured the Whites Only was self explanatory.

Well that is my answer. 

Spoken like a TRUE TRUMP SUPPORTER.  I don't care if it does not parse, that is what I want to say.    Oh brother.  

WHO CARES if it is the 2nd most popular language?  What does that have to do with DEMANDING everyone SPEAK it?  

Just because it is POPULAR and useful, does not give anyone the right to command that a language be spoken.

It is one of the strengths of our country that we all speak the same language. If you want to be able to succeed in this country you need to speak the language the majority of the people speak. 

If I were to move to Italy I would learn Italian or French for France etc. I certainly would not expect the locals to learn my language. 

English is not restricted to any race/color. It is the 2nd most common spoken lanugage in the world.

Fine.  I do agree that without communication we get nowhere.    If you speak the same language, you have some chance of succeeding and if you do not, you have no chance.  

But?  That sign?  Commanding one to do so?    

That is not a healthy instruction of why you should speak the language.

IT IS A COMMAND.  It is a threat.  It is very unsavory considering the S-HOLE country remarks that are coming out of the White House.  

Trump is unhinged and this is a perfect example of how he thinks.  Even though he can barely speak it himself.

Speaking English has long been a requirement for legal immigration to the USA. There is an interview to see if a prospective citizen can speak enough English to function as a citizen. 

Personally I agree with Teddy Roosevelt: 

"We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

DOES HE NEED TO?  Does it not represent EVERYTHING he stands for?    Do you think this stands for OBAMA?

COME ON. He is a racist pig.  And you are defending this ridiculous DEMAND that you speak ENGLISH and the unimpllied is the OR ELSE.

And TRUMP has provided the OR ELSE in SPADES.


I am not disputing the need for a major language.  YES. I think we should speak English.  We should not ONLY speak ENGLISH.  YOU HEAR ME?  NOT ONLY ENGLISH.  IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK SWAHILI GO FOR IT.

Teddy Roosevelt made sense in his fashion.  This has nothing to do with Teddy Roosevelt. This has to do with Jeff Sessions and the White Evangelicals.  English-WHITE. Anything else? S-hole.

I do not have any problem with people who don't speak English other than to the extent that, if you are an immigrant planning to live in this country permanently, it would behoove you to learn English in order to assimilate.  It irritates me to learn that someone who has been here for more than 5 years needs a translator for important discussions.  A perfect example of why you need to learn the common language is this:  recently, a child was left on a school bus by a driver and matron who only spike Russian.  The child's mother was called by the school to report that the child never arrived at school, but the mother didn't pick up the phone although  several attempts were made to reach her because she knew she would not be able to speak English to the person calling (she spoke only Spanish).  As a result, the child remained on the bus for several hours and they found her dead.  I don't know how long the Russians have been in the country, but they said the mother was here for 15 years.  Don't tell me that in all that time, she couldn't learn English.  She paid for that negligence with the life of her child.  

   You make very good points and I agree with your caveat about learning the language of one’s newly adopted country and assimilation.  I live mere miles from the US/Mexico border, this is a military town with people from many parts of the world, and I personally know people who have been in the US for five, ten, fifteen, twenty years or more who don’t speak a lick of English, and some of them have absolutely no intention to learn it. (There are some who even express disdain for English, but that’s another story.)

I cannot imagine moving permanently to another country and not learning the language.  It would make me nuts not to be able to communicate with people outside of my own group.  Even if that woman was here illegally, it shouldn't have stopped her from learning English.  If she had, her daughter might still be alive.  

Dogs smell each other.  They never smell and then attack.  It is the way they introduce themselves. 

We can't smell like dogs, so we choose to be friendly with those who have the same color skin as we do?  

The IDEA is so STUPID that it DEFIES description.  

I find it interesting that when I was teaching, the students segregated themselves. There were a few exceptions. Just an observation.

Element it is true.  It is NATURAL for those who have not learned to feel compassion to learn what it means.  When we are young and stupid we do what we have learned.  We have not had anyone point out the importance of respecting and loving each other.  No one teaches their children how awful it is to behave this way.  I think it is part and parcel of growing up and learning.  

It is natural for kids to have immature emotions.  They run all over the place.  And they want to be SAFE and not feel bullied, so naturally, they gravitate in their immature fashion to what seems safe and rewarding.  At the expense of others?  Sure.  They have no tools to use to defend themselves against feelings of insecurity and stress and inferiority.  They want to belong  to a group identity.

Counseling sounds a bit extreme. I never had a problem with sel-segregation, and I know why. I was just making an observation.

I do not know what you are trying to communicate, but it is NOT what I am communicating.

  I am black. I self-identity as black. I am a black man and I am proud of it. I am not African, I am not African-American. I am American, I am also proud of that. I cannot claim any other country, because I know no other country. I know not my specific ancestry other than the African continent, I cannot name a region thereof nor a precise group of people from whom I descend. I love my dark skin, my kinky hair, my full lips, I love everything that makes me the proud black man I am. I love my country, I have proudly served active duty military for my country, and I continue to this day to serve my country in many ways. My race of people are not perfect, nor are they wholly imperfect. My ethnicity includes both people who are good and people who are bad. My country is not perfect, my country is not always right, my country is not always good, nor fair, nor just. My country is not horrible, my country is not always wrong, nor unfair, nor unjust. 

  Some people of my ethnicity refer to themselves as black, some as African-American. They are not wrong. They choose to self-identify in the way that they deem correct. I choose to self-identify in the way I deem correct.
