I accept Visa, MC, Amex, Discover, and checks. I tell customers: "I will take their money anyway I can get it."
If a merchant calls Amex and tells them they want to cancel their account, Amex will remove their monthly fee and adjust their rate to make it still reasonable to accept them.

Points, miles and rewards are like doggy treats to get you to spend more. Look at me...I got fifteen dollars back by buying something I don't need for $1,000
Points, miles and rewards are geared toward people who spend lots of money. (Honestly, those on tight budgets shouldn’t bother with these kinds of cards.)
Points alone paid my family’s airfare to Italy. Rewards got us lodging and service upgrades.
I seldom(never) buy things I don’t need with a credit card. That’s what cash is for. ;-)

Places seem to be more accepting than they used to be, but I do still come across businesses that don't accept AmEx and/or Discover, so for that reason alone I wouldn't choose either.
