Any good songs about war and betrayal to open up 20/20????

How much do we know
To talk out of turn?
You might say that we're young
You might say we're unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good?
Will it buy you forgiveness?
Do you think that it would?
Oh, I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death will come soon
I'll stand on your grave
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Into your deathbed
And I'll stand on your grave till I'm sure that you're dead

Now there's a stab from the past.  They had quite an Indie following. I remember them.

  • Culture Club - "The War Song"

The first single released in 1984 from their third album,

"Waking Up With The House On Fire"

It charted on the U.S. Top 20 and peaked in the U.K. at #2.

    THE WAR SONG

    War war is stupid

    And people are stupid
    And love means nothing
    In some strange quarters
    War war is stupid
    And people are stupid
    And i heard the banging
    Of hearts and fingers

    People fill the world
    With narrow confidence
    Like a child at birth
    A man with no defense
    What's mine is my own
I won't give it to you
    No matter what you say
    No matter what you do

    Now we're fighting
    In our hearts
    Fighting in the street
    Won't somebody help me?

    War war is stupid
    And people are stupid
    And love means nothing
    In some strange quarters
    War war is stupid
    And people are stupid
    And i heard the banging
    Of hearts and fingers

    Man is far behind
In the search for something new
    Like a philistine
    We're burning witches too
    This world of fate
    Must be designed for you
    It matters what you say
    It matters what you do

    Now we're fighting
    In our hearts
    Fighting in the street
    Won't somebody help me?

    War war is stupid
    And people are stupid
    And love means nothing
    In some strange quarters
    War war is stupid
    And people are stupid
    And i heard the banging
    Of hearts and fingers

    After the bird has flown
    He walked ten thousand
    Miles back home

You can't do that to me
    War war is stupid.

Completely forgot about this song until I listened

    WA

    Edwin Starr

    War, huh yeah
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, oh hoh, oh
    War huh yeah
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it again y'all
    War, huh good God
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me

    Oh, war, I despise
'Cause it means destruction of innocent lives
War means tear to thousands of mothers eyes
When their sons go off to fight and lose their lives

    I said
    War, huh good God y'all
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, just say it again
    War whoa Lord
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker

Oh war, is an enemy to all mankind
The thought of war blows my mind
War has caused unrest within the younger generation
Induction, then destruction who wants to die

    War, good God, y'all
    What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing, say it, say it, say it
    War, uh huh, yeah, huh
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker
War, it's got one friend that's the undertaker

Oh, war has shattered many young man's dreams
Made him disabled bitter and mean
Life is much to short and precious to spend fighting wars these days
War can't give life it can only take it away, ooh

    War, huh, good God y'all
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, say it again
    War, whoa, Lord
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing, listen to me
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker

Peace love and understanding tell me
Is there no place for them today
They say we must fight to keep our freedom
But Lord knows there's got to be a better way

    War, huh, good God y'all
    What is it good for?
You tell 'em, say it, say it, say it, say it
    War, good Lord, huh
    What is it good for?
Stand up and shout it, nothing
War, it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker

    Let' make one up okay?
Here's a general idea - just brainstorming, right?

Oh Trump, Trumpety Trumptrump (trumpets blaring in the background)
    You got your war
    The Iranians bombed allies,
And that will help you win
As oil smoke fills the skys,
    And you'll be president ag'in.

    Chorus:
Arabs, the Arabs, Iranians whacked the Arabs.
Oh God save the Arabs and let's all to to war.
Four more years, four more years so sing about!

What do you think?  It needs a little sprucing up but it's a good start, right?  No sitting president during war (beside one) has ever been beaten in an election.

    "Russians"     Sting

     - - to me, the song applies to much more than the specifics to which it refers

    "Russians"

    [Soviet news report excerpt:]
...и премьер охарактеризовала переговоры с главой делегации Михаила Сергеевича Горбачёва как конструктивный, реалистический, типовой и дружественный обмен... ...но послание заложено...

In Europe and America there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets
Mister Khrushchev said, 'We will bury you'
I don't subscribe to this point of view
It'd be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Russians love their children too

How can I save my little boy
    From Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly of common sense
On either side of the political fence
    We share the same biology
    Regardless of ideology
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

There is no historical precedent to put
The words in the mouth of the president
There's no such thing as a winnable war
    It's a lie we don't believe anymore
Mister Reagan says 'We will protect you'
I don't subscribe to this point of view
Believe me when I say to you
I hope the Russians love their children too

    We share the same biology
    Regardless of ideology
What might save us, me and you
Is if the Russians love their children too

betrayal -- though unnamed specifically in the song, somehow I think there is a sense of betrayal in Perri's song

just hearing her sing the opening phrase bettered my day - I love her voice, truly

    "Jar of Hearts"   Christina Perri

I know I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live, half alive
And now you want me one more time

Who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    And tearing love apart
    You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms

I've learned to live, half alive
And now you want me one more time

Who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    And tearing love apart
    You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

It took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
    And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

Who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    And tearing love apart
    You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
    Don't come back for me
    Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
    Runnin' 'round leaving scars
    Collecting your jar of hearts
    Tearing love apart
    You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
    Don't come back for me
    Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?

    Wow.
    :)

    Me, too.

(With my track record of repeating stories with you in which we've already talked about things, here's probably another one -- I first heard Perri singing this song on the car radio, I was driving. I had to slow down and pull over to the side of the road and stop and sit, just to focus completely and listen.)

    :)

    Another head hangs lowly
    Child is slowly taken
When the violence caused such silence
    Who are we mistaken?

But you see it's not me
    It's not my family
In your head, in your head they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying

In your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-eeah-eeah
What's in your head, in your head?
    Zombie, zombie, zombie-eeah, oh

Do do do do, do do do do
Do do do do, do do do do

    Another mother's breaking
    Heart is taking over
    When the violence causes silence
    We must be mistaken

    It's the same old theme
    Since 1916
In your head, in your head they're still fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are dying

It's in your head, in your head
    Zombie, zombie ...
