On average, what percentage of solid food is retained in our bodies during digestion?

  • Good question, but I have no idea. I'll look it up and see what I can find. It seems that it would depend on rate of metabolism. I'm more or less still at the age where I can eat a ton and not gain an ounce (though admittedly I don't eat as much now as I did in my early 20s). At the beginning of digestion, it is all retained.  That percentage decreases as the food is absorbed.  About 10%-20% is eliminated after digestion (depending on what was eaten and what nutrients the body needed at the time).

(Source, please.) Also, grammar alert...hurry, before Stu or Randy see them. I don't do it anymore. (Except to them.)

  • This post is all about "Poop" but cleverly disguised as a health question.  Good work!

It depends upon the types of foods consumed. The body can break down most foods, but those high in fiber don't break down like beans and corn. They get expelled as waste, therefore the higher a diet is in fiber the bulkier the stool.
