What's the word you would use in conversations if you want to sound smart?

I'm like, totally, good with words.

It was in this question... In my everyday speech, I tend to use "like" a lot :(

    Ramifications

I find the people on here that denigrate the use of large words deplorable. Putting people down for using the language properly sounds like a bid for dumbing down.
Who gets aggravated because someone speaks eloquently?
A bid for simple words is cry from the intellectually stilted. It is a vote for TRUMP. DOWN WITH LEARNING, and bettering oneself.
May we all use BIG WORDS and learn how to think through the use of them. May we all learn a new BIG word every day and share it with the rest of the lazy who cannot even use anything past two syllables.

DOWN WITH STUPID. Down with those who do not even know what an ignoramus is.

Words that impress people? I don't know, but there are words that impress me.I see them in studies of art, either in materials of art history. Here are a few.

    1. Catalyst--a substance that causes a chemical reaction, but in art, I see it often as a person who causes change in how art evolves.
    2. Gouache--watercolor paints mixed with an opaque white.
    3. Encaustic paints are a type of paints mixed with hot, liquid wax.
    4. Vellum--a parchment made of calf skin used for writing or printing. But in art, Vellum paper is different. It is made from plastized cotton.

  • @ hartfire What I got from all that was an immense sense of admiration for your mother and her dedication of being better, sounding better, knowing better. That's a fantastic story, all by itself.

  • That's it exactly. I'm a fish that can't fly, but at least I can swim okay.

Most definitely not "like." That makes you sound stupid. But I've never needed to use any specific word to sound smart - it's always happened organically.

Then why don't you try to use it less? It's not that difficult, and you'll sound smarter and less like an empty-headed valley girl.

Because it's a habit. And my question was mostly tongue-in-cheek. I don't mind sounding like an empty-headed valley girl sometimes. People underestimate me, because I am far from being one.

    Thank you for your comment.
