Me either. It was meant to be a book and the old-fashioned cartoon.
Poor Max!! But.... the expressions are priceless!! And... to a kid who loved animals, as most kids do, we could grasp how "evil" the Grinch was in the scene. This one hit home as a kid. As an adult, it is truly hysterically funny by means of fantastic animation. This is STILL my favorite, all-time, Christmas special. :) :) :) :))!!
I have several, but the two at the top are the 1935 version of Dicken's A Christmas Carol called "Scrooge" with Seymour Hicks and the latter satirical version with Bill Murray from 1988 called "Scrooged"
It is very funny. The basics are the couple (Tim Allen and Jaimie Lee Curtis) facing their first Christmas without their only child in the home (she is out of the country) so they decide to just completely skip Christmas and take a vacation. And their neighbors and friends are not happy about it. Very funny.
