Kim sez North Korea is no longer bound by any TEST FREEZE agreement and has built a new weapon. How d'ya want don to respond to that?

Ignore it, belittle it and call Kim names, "make nice" with Kim?

I'm pretty sure the last war (Iraq) was the brainchild of George W. Bush, a Republican.

Yep and but it recently has been the Dems trying to push Trump into attacking NOKO/Iran/Russia/Syria etc. Implying that he is not as strong on them as he should be....

This is yet another example (actually two) of IOKYAR  (IOKYAR = It's OK If Your're A Republican).

If any Democratic president in the past 50 years had suggested normalizing relations with North Korea, the hue and cry from the political right about "Another Evil Commie Democrap being Soft on Communism" would have resounded all over the media. Admittedly, some Democrats (e.g Hilary Clinton, Diane Feinstein, etc.) tend to be on the hawkish side.

But since Trump decided to do it, suddenly that's OK (It's a Republican)

Now, because the hawkish members of the Democratic Party are being hard-liners on North Korea (and if you actually read the article you linked, you would have noticed some of the younger more progressive Democrats have tried to end US support for Saudi Arabia's war with Yemen, so the party is not monolithic on these issues), their being criticized for it? (It's not OK...because they're not Republicans).

I wonder if US politics will ever return to a state where actual political principles drive conversation and policy. (Nah, probably not.)

It is a matter of what do they get....sanctions removed? Pallet of money? Guarentee of a weapon in 10 yrs?

Nothing wrong with talking. But there is something wrong with something for nothing. Which is what NOKO has gotten for decades.
They threaten and like a parent of a spoiled child we give them a reward. Stupid.
If Hillary was Pres we would already be at war with them. If Trump listened to Bolton we would be at war as well.  Kim has got a couple of photo ops. Oh well. He still has sanctions and is likely getting more soon.

And, of course, you don't remember (or want to remember) that it was the Boy Emperor (George W. Bush) who really upset the apple cart on this one.

There was a sanctions regime in place where NOKO was allowed nuclear power but was closely monitored by the international community (with literal live cameras watching their every move at their nuclear facilities). Then NOKO was named part of the Axis of Evil (never mind that Iraq, Iran, and NOKO had NO strategic interests in common and Iraq and Iran were actual bitter geopolitical rivals), and having a rational sanctions regime on NOKO went out the window.

And let's not even start on how the world looked the other way while Israel developed its nuclear weapons.

Nope, gotta regurgitate that "pallets of cash" talking point (which was money that ***IRAN*** was legally entitled to. What would you have preferred? Sacks of pennies? BitCoin? Unsold Chyrslers?)

    Bush was an idiot.
Money should have been transferred in an account to be monitored. Pallets of cash looks sleazy. Obama should have been smart enough to know that.

Do you really think North Korea is really willing to sit down and diplomatically craft an agreement by which they will limit their nuclear capabilities?  The entire time Trump was glowing over the BIG love letter Kim sent him, NK was continuing its nuclear program.  They are incapable of being honest.  The Kurds have been a proven ally to the US, yet Trump decided to abandon them.  Trump has absolutely no idea how to create a workable foreign policy.  He makes decisions based on which side of the bed he wakes up on.

Trump is stroking rocketman's ego. Of course they do not want to get rid of there weapons.
How to you propose we force it?

Syria do we leave our troops their for 20 more yrs? Do we fight a NATO ally for someone who is "the enemy of my enemy"....we told them we would not be drawn into a fight with Turkey for them. They erected huge picts of a convicted Kurdish terrorist imprisoned in Turkey in areas they had gained control of from Islamic State.  (We have discussed it....we disagree. I had to research it. I was orginally mad about it as well) This post was edited by my2cents at January 2, 2020 9:48 AM MST

I don't know that we can force NK to do anything.  China is the country that has the most "control" over NK, but considering out situation vis-a-vis trade, they aren't likely to do anything for us.

Turkey is not our friend, even if it is in NATO.  No, we don't stay in Syrian for 20 years - we arm the Kurds and let them fight.

We have a phrase 1 trade deal with China. We have to stand up to them....they have been stealing and cheating us and the world for decades.

I like the idea of arming the Kurds but is that allowed under NATO....cause like them or not they are a NATO member.

There is no deal until we and the Chinese actually sign the agreement.

I don't know if it's allowed, but we have been assisting the Kurds for years.  I would think if NATO had objections, they would have surfaced by now.

There are Kurds who do fight Turkey that is the problem.
They are 4-5 different sides there. Syria, Russia, Turkey, Kurds, Iran, Islamic State and they all fight amongst each other.

Yes, they are all fighting each other, but the Kurds seem to want to be self-governing which is why I believe we have been allies to them and supported them.  As far as I'm concerned, we can pull out of the Middle East and let them kill each other off.  It they want to continue living in the 16th Century, that is their business, not ours.

Yes. They want their own country. They want some of Turkey, some of Syria, some of Iraq and some of Iran for their own country. Kurdistan.

I agree we do not need in the middle of it. Let them sort it out.  This post was edited by my2cents at January 6, 2020 7:06 PM MST

Bolton and Pompeo (both Republicans) are on record as favouring preemptive strikes on NK and Iran - and it was Obama who thrashed out a Peace Accord with Tehran that His Royal Orangeness has unilaterally smashed. Try again.

Yes. That is one of the reasons Bolton is gone.
Pompeo is a hawk. I do not deny that.

Iran deal was a joke. It guaranteed Iran a nuke in 10yrs. We could not inspect. Sanctions are working. That is why they are acting out.
