Do you "sample" the grapes at the grocery store?

I don't. I won't eat them unless I can wash them first.

Our large grocery chain store wouldn't allow that, but we have a local produce market/deli that doesn't mind. I don't care about micro-organisms.

  • Yes...all the time. I'm one of those people that believes that it is actually more harmful to your health to be overly cautious about bacteria. I'm not saying that licking raw chicken is a good thing, Btw.

  • Yes. There is often one bag left open especially for people to sample. I have returned sour grapes before.

No. That is stealing. Grapes are meant to be sold by weight, and it is an act of theft to consume them without weighing them for purchase.

Good idea to wash the produce first because you don't know what it may have been exposed to; people's hands after picking their nose or scratching their butt or even possibly mouse/rat droppings.

As a senior who is getting old and feeble I should be aware that my immune system may becoming somewhat weakened.

Not any more; I extrapolated the practice into sampling other merchandise, products and services, so when I sat down for a consultation with a very attractive lady at the insurance company, I couldn't keep my hands off of her.  That was years ago, though, so I'm better now.  (I have to log off now; it's time for me to check in with my probation officer.)

Many grocery stores around here have the water hose/mister set up right at the display shelves.

I agree, I see those all the time.  I'm not a sampler, though.  I think it's wrong.

I can't either.  It's not the germs, I just think that merchandise is not my mine until/unless I pay for it first.

  • Absolutely.

I have my limits, too.  One thing I refuse to do is eat from salad bars or buffets at restaurants. It creeps me out. I know that sounds weird since I'd nibble a grape at a market

No, but I sure as h*** inspect them VERY carefully before picking up a bunch of black or purple ones. I started doing that after one of the "grapes" in a bunch of organic black grapes made a b-line (or maybe I should say a spider line) for my hand when I took it out of the bag in the kitchen. Black Widow bites are no fun, or so I hear . . .

Yes the major chains almost always do but not so much the privately owned grocery stores.
