They were found by a Kriegsmarine warship and a boat was launched to retrieve the survivors. As the German sailor reached down to assist the first of the survivors, the fellow looked up a his rescuer and enquired: 'Who are you? Are you German or enemy?' The sailor responded: 'Don't be stupid, we are here to save your lives. It doesn't matter who we are!'
For me that is once heard, never forgot.

'Moonfleet' was one of our set books at school, and I remember the passage about the two leading characters escaping from Ringstead (I can't remember if that name was used in the book) by using a very steep cliff path. That path, or an equivalent, exists, up White Nothe, some 400 feet high, and someone showed it me a few years ago. I was glad to have climbed it, but I found it frightening and would not care to try it again!
The normal path from the car-park to that area of beach is gentler and not at all exposed.
I suppose I'm nearly local! Our family moved to Weymouth in 1959, when I was 7, when Dad's work was moved.  less

My paternal antecedents lived in Weymouth and Portland for generations, but of course, your ancestors may not have lived where you do. A per pro of nothing, my great-great grandfather's ship is mentioned in the novel 'Moonfleet' by J. Meade Falkner. Both my g-g-gf and Falkner lived in Weymouth. I was sorry when Portland's Pennsylvania Castle reverted to private ownership. The restaurant there was one of the finest I know of. I stayed at the Pennsylvania Castle hotel for a week back in 1980.

the groups here mere echoing remnants of something long past?
To enter is like walking the cobwebbed halls of a sleeping palace - without the beautiful sleeping princess. Maybe she went off with someone who got here before me.
Could the groups be another fine idea that just couldn't cut the mustard?
Couldn't the site programming be made to at least erase any group that hasn't attracted a single Mugger, or has been dormant for at least a month (for instance)?
