justwannaknow replied to Is there a term for when someone says something that they think proves their point, but instead unintentionally does the opposite?:
After asking a few sources, "specious" appears to be the most accurate word.

While reading through the Mr. Welch list, I've noticed a lot of items about elves, notably elven women, being promiscuous. I've never thought along these lines myself, so where does the idea come from? Is it simply a result of the idea of elves being preternaturally attractive combined with the idea of being played by a perverted gamer? Or are there some fiction/fan-fiction around that have caused this trope to manifest?

The more open-ended a question/task is, the harder it is for me, so I need a fairly concrete process to work with. The two worst things someone can tell me are "There are no right answers" and "There are no wrong answers". It might seem like overthinking to a creative person, but my binary mind needs as much information as possible to be able to function. For example, I find algebra, calculus and programming exceedingly easy, but I find songwriting, brainstorming and essays almost impossible.  less

I have a very basic idea but I need to expand it. I'm planning to try to write a series in comic/graphic novel format because it's a good trade-off between a written format and a video format. As a programmer and a straight-up logical person, I work best when I have a series of logical steps I can follow and struggle with anything that doesn't have a defined right or wrong answer. To workaround this, I've decided I need to create a list of things that I need to know to create my story. Essentially questions that, when answered form a basic framework for the story. So far the components I've thought of are:

    Setting:

    Year
    Location (Real/Fictional/Fantasy)

    Characters:

    Abilities
    Personality
    Motivation
    Goals
    Relationships

I know more information and more detailed components are needed, but I'm not sure what.As mush detail as possible would be great. Once I have a formula, for lack of a better term, I can tweak it into a more unique ...    less

Are they simply new marketing terms for existing TCP/IP-based protocols, or are they more complex than that? I've read up on them on Wikipedia, but it doesn't make much sense to me outside of being a fancy name for network communications.

  • What are the best questions to ask someone to ascertain the status of your friendship?

We are friends but I'm never sure exactly what that level of friendship is. We've had times where we've talked endlessly about everything and nothing, but other times she barely acknowledges my existence. She's said things in messages like "I'm glad to have you as a friend" and that she's "awfully lucky to know (me)", but I don't see that constantly translated into behaviour.

I'd like to gauge exactly where we sit as friends in get mind, so I'd like to know the best questions to ask her.  less

In school, whenever we were supposed to create something (stories, art, etc.) I would generally spend the entire time unable to do anything, getting more and more frustrated by the minute. By contrast, I could never understand why everyone complained so much about maths because it was so unbelievably simple and easy to understand (for me, anyway). Even 15 years after graduating, it's still an annoyance.

Similarly, when given a word association activity, generally it can take up to 30 seconds for even a single word to come into my head. Also, when my singing teacher had me try to brainstorm song ideas, in the 5 minutes given to come up with related ideas, she wrote 2 pages and I got about 5 words.

For some background, I have been diagnosed with ADD, so that may be a factor.

Any ideas? (Other than "you ARE creative, you just don't know it")  less
