What is the oldest man-made object in your house?

I had a few coins dating back to the 1790s, but I gave them away. The oldest thing I have is a chemistry/physics book from 1922.

Yes---I was rather shocked when I realized that I was literally the oldest thing here.

I inherited a Cherrywood secretoire that is beautiful which may be an antique.  I've never attempted to discover it's worth or its age.

  • Interesting you should ask.  I am in the process of having Goat add extra studs to a small patch of wall in my kitchen so that I can hang this "heavier-than-hell-is-hot" antique phone up to display.  All solid wood and dense metal parts.  Phones have definitely come a long way but I swear to God I can crank that baby and probably get a better connection than I ever got with Verizon.

"Howdy Gertrude, this is Twinle Dink out on old county rd. 11.   How you doin' hun? Sorry to bother you but I'd be much obliged if you'd be so kind as to patch me through to Gus Walker over at the Mercantile please."

A bowl that belonged to my grandmother that is stamped 'Made in Occupied Japan'  or the flatware my mom got as a wedding gift in 1947. I'm not sure which is older.

  • There is a wooden chest that sits in the living room. An ancestor brought it with him from England when he came to California during the Gold Rush in the 1840s.

Probably some furniture inherited from my great-great-grandfather - made in the 1840's from Australian Mahogany and Blackwood by early colonial cabinetmakers in late Victorian style.

I have a woman-made crocheted afghan that is roughly 39 years old. As for objects presumably made by men, I have a 1930s-era General Electric Westminster Chime clock which belonged to my grandfather...

...and a vacuum tube radio, probably the same vintage, like this one...

A home made TV vacuum tube tester that a friend of the family gave me before he died - it was made in the early 1960's. Cheers!
