Am I a bad person (er...cockatoo) for lying to a Mike Bloomberg campaign worker? Am I distorting our political process?

This past Sunday, a pollster for Mike Bloomberg knocked on the door of my home and asked for my presence.

When I went out to meet her, she pitched me on the...um,"virtues" of Mike Bloomberg and asked if I had decided whom to vote for. I just wanted her to go away as quickly as possible, so I didn't react to her pitch and told her that I'm "undecided" (which is technically true, but omits the important "but definitely NOT Bloomberg" caveat).

Am I giving the Bloomberg campaign false hope and distorting "polling numbers" with my action?

    I don't know about "well paid", but I suspect she was not a volunteer.

  • When people like that come to your door ... I think you can tell them nothing or whatever you want.  Who we're going to vote for is no one's business but our own.  Personally, I wouldn't even answer the door.

    I wouldn't worry about distorting anything ... they should be happy you took time to talk to them at all.  They are trying to sway your thinking and sadly, it will work on a lot of folks.  Easier to let someone tell you who to vote for than to think and do research for yourself.

    One of my housemates answered the door and she wasn't entirely forthcoming with her intentions, so I was suckered into speaking to her. I didn't take that long or disturb my Sunday all that much. It was only upon reflection that I wondered if the Bloomberg campaign is using such a flawed polling method to gauge the public's sentiments.

  • I think you answered her question just fine.  From what you said she asked if you had decided whom to vote for and you said you spoke truth when you said "undecided".  It doesn't seem like she asked you to specify if you are decided against anyone.

    It seemed the quickest way to get rid of her, and I felt it was more polite than saying "Get thee behind me, Satan!" or such...

  • You gave her WAY too much of your time.  My door would have flattened her nose as soon as I heard Bloomberg's name, or names of any other candidates striving for the DEATH TO AMERICA nomination. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at February 18, 2020 5:39 PM MST

    You have me at a disadvantage. I was under the impression Mike Bloomberg was running as a Democrat. A brief Internet search suggests DEATH TO AMERICA occurs primarily as an Iranian political slogan. Since I am not a citizen of Iran, it is unlikely anyone from that country's political system would be seeking my vote.

    I actually somewhat agree with the sentiment that political campaigns are truthful, you just have to do a little bit of translation.

    When Trump said "Make America Great Again", he was really saying "Make America White Again".  You just had to pay attention to the context and subtext.

    Examples are legion.
