  You’re referring to Eunuchs, and they don't exactly “join”, the they are “recruited” or “enforced volunteers”, aka slaves. Their function is security, and they are castrated so that they won’t diddle with the ladies.  A male without functioning naughty bits can neither impregnate the women nor even fornicate with them, so his muscular build is the primary asset he offers the harem, his presence is the secondary.



  In the Randolph D Harem, a more modern version of the traditionally ancient one, NO males on sight other than myself are necessary, sought, tolerated or allowed.

Actually eunuchs can have erections.

I gelded most of my colts at 3 months old. The age for a horse to reach sexual maturity is 18-24 months.
All my geldings have erections - usually when they are relaxed, sleepy and enjoying the sun. During their dreams, their pelvis jerks forward and under and their penis jerks up against their bellies. Afterwards, they look even more relaxed.
When stallions do this, they ejaculate. It's how they deal with periods when no mare is in oestrus.

It has always been assumed that eunuchs could not have sex. What is more accurate is that they cannot conceive babies.
Eunuchs and geldings do lose the desire to copulate.
But eunuchs do not always lose the desire to give pleasure. Many had much to gain from it.
