I honestly can’t see how shutting down the economy is benefiting any government.

I know, right?  Look at all the millions of dollars being shelled out to pay people to stay home and not go to work. Yeah, the government will truly benefit by turning the entire nation into a welfare state.

    Insert eye-roll here.

You believe getting millions upon millions of people dependent on the gov will not increase the gov's control of those people?

Do you assume that any government wants 51% or more of its population on the public dole?  Especially for an unknown amount of time that looks as if it may last up to 18 months or more?  Your position makes it seem as if someone prefers this situation. No one benefits from this, absolutely no one. It is a lose-lose for all.

    IT’S. NOT. FISCALLY. SUSTAINABLE!!!!!

Nowhere did I say they prefer it.
I said they will use it. And some are using the virus already as I listed below.
We will not be shut down for 18 months. We were shutdown to flatten the curve so hospitals would not be overwhelmed. That will not take 18 months....that is happening now.  This post was edited by my2cents at April 14, 2020 7:20 AM MDT

Don't fret so....Yawl haul have to pay more taxes to pay for it....  The goverment won't ever loose out in the long run....you'll all end up dead ,long before it gets to effect them..same  in any conflict now.....the big boss is the last  in line to die for his cause....

Some of the state govs are attacking rights.
Closed gun stores while releasing prisoners because of the virus. (Attack on USA 2nd amendment)

Some not allowing IN-CAR church services. (Attack on USA 1st amendment)

Shutting down faith based soup kitchens but not secular ones. (Again 1st amendment)

Now there is talk of an app to track people with and without the virus that will work with government and Google/Android. (Attack on USA on 4th amendment)
