ER personnel regularly see cases that are depressing/upsetting ... domestic violence, crime violence, accident victims, etc.
It doesn't surprise me that they would be more subject to depression.
We see the same thing in police and military.

It's because people are confronted with severe reality and conditioned to never experience it and it's too emotionally much to accept. Most might start crying, but, not this lady.

That really shook me to my core Walt. I think because I see them as strong knowledgeable UNBREAKABLE! My experience with doctors my entire life is that I can always rely on them to "fix" things. Make things better. You know like when you are a kid your parents are so strong and wise and always there? I think she was 49 and maybe she was exhausted and overwhelmed and saw little improvement? Also though she took away being there for all the people she could have helped futurely. Gone. I have been down in the dumps on occasion but never stayed there for very long. I don't really know what clinical depression is like but a friend who had it said days went by when he saw no reason to get out of bed. I can't comprehend that. Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I hope to he** that doesn't happen again but it could. Happy Wednesday Walt. Still doing okey dokey are we? I hope.

Because most likely they have severe empathy for those that need their knowledge and understanding of a patiences medical condition and for many there is nothing they can do...
I think we can become attached to even strangers quite quickly and it can feel like a close family member is about to die and they are powerless to help them anymore..

We have Macmillan nurses here in England.....they are nurses that care for those that are waiting to die...
May be its a gift of nature that they are strong enough to cope with it ....I don't think we are all built the same way...
We all have a niche to find and fill...people that care are no differnt to the rest of us , they just have more dedication to others ,more so than they do for themselves...

We have "Hospice" here. A place where people go to die. No other way to put it than that. I expect the medical staff there faces awful ever day. Watching people die and knowing there is nothing they can do about it but make the patients as comfy as possible. I don't have the "right stuff" to do that without breaking down all the time which would be of no good to them and no good to me. I don't know where they get the strength but I think they are gifted with it. Thank you for your thoughtful reply D. She can do no more to help anyone. Sad that. I do think thise  that help the dying cope with their situation have a natural gift if caring for others before them self.....
Ive witnessed with just one family friend in hospital that was dying from various differnt stages of cancers that had gon around her body ..I was with her until about eleven in the evening and she was not concious when I left ...She died not long after ..I think the morphine knocked her out and she just never knew what was happening and passed away pain free..
it's so hard to type this...I can hardley see what I'm writing....so sad she's gone

Oh D I'm so sorry for your loss. That was a very kind and loving thing you did for her and well even though she was unconscious I think she was "aware" of your presence on some other level. Condolences to you my friend. SIGH. ((Hugs)) This post was edited by RosieG at April 29, 2020 10:09 AM MDT

One can only look on and be there so they are not alone...there is no right or wrong way to pass away I think..
