What is the purpose of putting # in front of stuff?

Yeah, what is this thing using # to indicate pounds of weight?  That # indicates NUMBER. 

OK, this may sound strange coming from a Silent Genrationer, but I was told that the hashgtag (#) before a word helps to find all comments relating to that topic at one time.  Now, all I have to do is give a darn about finding every comment on a topic. :)
