I have nothing to offer, I don't watch many 'chic flics' as one would expect from Meryl.

You certainly might like The Hours and Doubt....both won best film awards.  They are not chick flicks

I read the book "One True Thing" and, at this point, I don't think I'd want to see it as a movie.

PLOT SPOILER!! "One True Thing" - -

I found the book excellent but also terribly emotionally draining experience for me.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things about the movie.

You're right, the novel was great. :)

Let's just put it this way.
If you would like a little drama and a lot of good acting, google Meryl Streep and you will find an afternoon of both!!

    Thriftymaid nailed them!!
    YeAAAA!!

The first movie to come to my mind :

directed by Robert Altman -- "A Prairie Home Companion"     SO excellent! A huge excellent cast. I think this might have been Altman's last film to direct

    A Prairie Home Companion (2006) - Movie Posters (1 of 4)

And Thriftymaid named some of my others --

    "The Hours"
    "Silkwood"
"Kramer vs. Kramer" -- Streep is who I remember the most from that movie

and I also add the made-for-TV miniseries  "Holocaust"

Yeah, I watched 'A Prairie Home Companion" simply because Altman directed it and, at the time, I was watching a lot of movies he directed. I knew nothing about it other that is is based around the concept of the Garrison Keillor (spelling?) radio program. The movie is a highlight in my life of watching movies. :)
I highly, highly recommend it - - it went to places I wasn't expecting. Understated, unassuming and moving to me. :)

    Great cast, too.
