With so many people having caught it, why is the coronavirus continually referred to as "novel?"

    It means new. I suspect they'll stop calling it novel when there's a proven vaccine.

    Novel: adjective. New, original,  recently come into existence. 

    A novel is a literary work of fiction,  eg when the bible was written it was a novel novel.

     Who claimed that the media did or did not “invent” the word?  Stating that the media used or uses a word is a far cry from claiming that the media invented it.

    Adjective---    novel, means having recently come into existence or use.

    If something is recent, it happened in the immediate past or not long ago. You are a recent fan of yoga if you just started liking it in the past week or two. If you talk about something that happened in recent months or years, it means the last one to three months or years.
