If you didn't know they were brains, would they have been OK? I like liver.

My expectations made it the worst food for me --

as an around-ten-years-old boy, at a big party/ get-together with my family at a friend's house and there were a lot of other people there, too. Everyone had brought food to share.

    I live for chocolate cake.

There was a delicious-looking chocolate cake. I got a piece. Sat down. Took a big bite and about barfed --  it was a chocolate mocha cake.

Why anyone ever thought of totally ruining chocolate cake by adding coffee is beyond me.

    :)

I’ll hide you, Welby. I have an anti-coffee -lovers’ shelter dug into a hillside not far from my city.

    Thank God. Thanks!

I'm surprised I haven't needed it before now.  Most people I know love coffee.

I've seen, here and there, other people mentioning about her love for coffee. :) Ha!

But I'll still bravely stand behind my "I about barfed because of coffee" story. :)

Much like the music and movie questions of this ilk, it’s difficult for me to narrow down one food I’ve experienced over my several decades on earth to identify a superlative such as the worst of all.

    Grapefruit.

    Ghastly, repulsive, and offensive.

    Aw, shucks!  :)
I love grapefruit! And grapefruit juice, too! :)  "Vodka and grapefruit juice" is my favorite alcoholic drink, too, ha!

    A fish's eye.
I was in Kuala Lumpur at the time. Some friends had taken us to a top floor revolving restaurant, Chinese.
As a guest of honour, I was presented with the fish's head cooked in a delicious sauce.
After eating the cheeks, tongue and brain, there was not much left and I was still hungry.
With reluctance, I tried the eye.
As one might expect, it had the texture of a gelatinous ball, until something went "crunch" in my mouth.
I felt quite unnerved and very uncomfortable.
I couldn't spit it out for fear of giving offence, so with a massive act of determination I swallowed it.
I left the second eye untouched.
Much later, I was able to ask. They never eat the eyes. The whole point of the head is that it has so little flesh. It is an opportunity to display a lack of greed.
Just goes to show how hard it is to imagine how foriegn cultures think unless one has a good guide.

    Lol!

My wife is Asian, and in the beginning of our marriage I was as equally appalled as any Westerner would be upon learning that in her culture, the entire fish is eaten, head and tail included. Within a few short months I had been indoctrinated into her ways, and to this day I find the head of a fish to be just as delicious as the rest of it.  The only difference from your story is that they do eat eyes, brains, gills and all.  Now, so do I.

    Hats off to your adaptability.
The world would be a better place if all of us could manage to adapt so well.

Thank you. I’m all fairness, I have either accepted or adopted or adapted to only about 50% of what I have learned from her culture. The other 50%?  After more than two decades, if it hasn’t sunk in so far, it probably ain’t ever going to happen.
