It was a wonderful experience.  I loved every minute of it up to the point where we were coming back down from Sitka and in open waters and I made the mistake of looking out the porthole and got seasick.  I immediately went to the infirmary and they gave me some pills which worked like a charm and I enjoyed the rest of the trip.

Only on a cruise, that was enough to last a lifetime.

Yes, I proudly served three straight years of sea duty as a US Marine on Western Pacific Deployments aboard various ships of the US Third Fleet and the US Seventh Fleet. Semper Fi, Shipmate!

My years of Marine Corps service have been the best ones of my life.

Open water fishing, but never out of sight from land (except when it got a little rough, and the waves were higher than line-of-sight). Drifting between Box Head and Lion Island, you can't miss. Trevally and Snapper mostly, unless the little school sharks (hammerheads) have chased them away, so you catch those instead.

Yes, but nothing as illustrious as Naval or Mercantile service!

Just as a passenger on public ferries across the English Channel and North Sea - one cross-Channel trip by hovercraft rather than conventional ship.

And much less conventionally, coastal cruises on the preserved paddle-steamer Waverley. This is the world's only sea-going paddle-steamer, and it was noticeable how much interest she attracts from crew-members on other ships, photographing us cruising majestically past. One excursion took us into the Royal Naval base at Portsmouth, where due to the rather constricted basin a tug had to help turn the Waverley. As soon as that had completed the move, its crew all leapt for their cameras or 'phones! This post was edited by Durdle at November 18, 2020 3:08 PM MST
